Overview

Four speakers represent four outcomes of four different sustainable design strategies. By using varying materials, production techniques and end-of-life services, 4 unique speakers are created.

Why

A smart speaker is a piece of consumer electronics that cannot be missed in the era of smart home tech. It is a product that is both mass-marketed and phased out quickly: this poses a wonderful opportunity to make an impact when rethinking the way they are designed, manufactured and serviced. The sustainable smart home speakers were born.

How

In this research-heavy project numerous sustainable design strategies have been explored. These have then been 'frankensteined' into four extremes. To tie the speakers together as a family, brainstorms were held to look into which aesthetic and functional features each should be sharing. After, a parallel process of CMF research, sketching, 3D modelling, contacting material suppliers, and a lot of prototyping has taken place. Followed by rendering and shooting GIFs and writing copy to convey the story to the world.

What

Sustainable Smart Speakers each follow a different sustainable design strategy leading to four differently produced speakers in their respective themes: Repair & Upgrade, Recycling, Remanufacturing & Longevity. They each claim their own space in the circular lifecycle, and thereby omitting the linear lifecycle.
